Hamas: Israel’s strength not eternal

Senior Hamas member says in interview with Arab-Israeli newspaper Kul el-Arab ‘who can assure me that (Prime Minister Ariel) Sharon will never attempt to conquer us once again? Who can assure me the he will leave the West Bank alone?’ Adds, ‘we dealt a blow to Israel’s security model with our suicide bombings, Qassam rockets and tunnels’

Israel is a foreign entity, and therefore it is hard for us to recognize it, senior Hamas member Mahmoud al-Zahar told Nazareth-based Arab-Israeli newspaper Kul el-Arab.

“Israel is a country that must be rejected. It signed a peace treaty with Egypt, but have any Egyptian academians or artists, or even thieves or dancers, normalized their relationship with Israel? No one has,” al-Zahar said.

“The Egyptian people staunchly oppose normalization. The Palestinian problem is a specific one, and we do not differentiate between the Palestinians of 1948 and the Palestinians of 1967.”

He added that “the Right of Return is holy, and no one has the right to relinquish it. Israel’s power is not eternal, and neither is our weakness.”

“I am certain that (Palestinian) homeowners will return to their homes (in Israel) someday.”

As to the possibility that Hamas would disarm, al-Zahar said, “Who can assure me that (Prime Minister Ariel) Sharon will never attempt to conquer us once again? Who can assure me the he will leave the West Bank alone? How can we rely on people who constantly change their minds?”

“We dealt a blow to Israel’s security model, which was based on military strength, a quick victory and distancing the 1948 home front from the confrontation. We struck all of these three principles with our suicide bombings, Qassam rockets and tunnels.”
