About 25,000 people have joined the ranks of the Labor party in the last several days, convincing old time members that newly-elected Chairman Amir Peretz may indeed put new wind in the sails of the party.

The total number of new members constitutes a rise of 20 percent in Labor membership.

Most of the people who have registered with the party are new members, although some are members who have joined the party before, but whose registration forms were disqualified after suspicions of forged enrollment forms arose.

Sources at the Labor party said that it was undoubtedly Amir Peretz's election as party leader that encouraged the new members to enlist with the party.

Peretz's associates have already expresses satisfaction over the pleasing enlistment rates, and explained the success by the chairman's triumph in the primaries, which "gave many people in Israel the feeling that Labor can form an alternative for the government."

The chairman's supporters were pleased not only with the high number of followers, but with the identity of some of them as well: many high profile artists joined the party Thursday, including actors, singers and musicians.
