Shalom slams Mofaz, Bibi loyalty to Likud

Foreign Minister officially launches campaign for Likud party leadership; asks Mofaz, Netanyahu if their remaining in Likud is dependent upon election results

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom officially launched his campaign for Likud party leadership Tuesday evening, after convening several hundred members from across the country in Tel Aviv.

During his speech, Shalom criticized both Defense Minister Shaul and former Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"Who can rehabilitate the Likud and in four months lead it to a great victory," he said. "I'm asking Shaul Mofaz tonight, will you stay in the Likud under any condition or is it dependent upon the outcome. And I'm asking Benjamin Netanyahu will you stay in the Likud under any condition or is it also dependent upon the outcome? In 1999, Bibi left when the Likud crashed."

"I have started off on my way to return the Likud to the Likudniks," he said. "It is undeniable that the Likud is in crisis and cannot be swept under the rug. But what you see today will not be seen on March 29."

"Today there are political parties that have been chosen to be a fashion channel, with new models everyday. But what about its way? The Likud has roots and a path and that is why we will win."

Meanwhile, several supporters of jailed spy Jonathan Pollard booed Shalom in the midst of his speech.

The activists shouted slogans and waved signs calling for Pollard’s release. They were cleared out of the hall by security personnel.

Earlier, Mofaz called on Likud members to stay in Likud and resist offers to join Sharon’s Kadima party which he labeled a “virtual party that exists only in polls.”

Mofaz will launch his campaign for the Likud primaries on Thursday in Tel Aviv.
