A group of high-profile public figures in the Arab community in Israel convened this week in the northern town of Nazareth to found a "national committee" in support of Syria, the Arab Panorama newspaper has reported.
The group includes prominent leaders such as Attorney Muhammad Miari, Sheikh Wahab Kahreb, Attorney Khaled Zoubi, Greek-Orthodox church official Atalla Hanna, and others.
The committee was established in response to "the ongoing American aggression, together with its Arab and foreign collaborators, carried out in a bid to exercise the new imperialistic plan to increase the economic and military influence over all the Arab territories," according to a statement published by the members.
The senior participants in the gathering went on to invite the Arab public to join the new organization.
"Are we to join the silent Arab camp, or to break the horrifying barrier of silence and show solidarity with Syria and its principles?" the members asked in the statement.
"The adventure against Syria aims at hurting the Arab identity and eliminating the Palestinian and Lebanese case by way of deepening the Israeli occupation," they concluded.
