Israeli scientists test Ritalin replacement

Oil-based substance could help children with behavioral and concentration problems, scientists say

Israeli scientists have developed what they believe could be a natural alternative to Ritalin and other drugs for use to treat ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) behavioral symptoms such as short attention span and inability to focus.

The study is being carried out at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, where researchers have discovered an oil-based substance that benefits children with ADHD in a way similar to Ritalin.

Some 90 children aged 8-13 took part in the study. They first underwent psychiatric evaluation in the hospital where their ADHD was confirmed. The parents of one group of children were asked to spread the substance together with chocolate spread on a slice of bread each morning.

The parents of an additional 30 children were asked to spread fish oil on bread because of its health benefits. The remaining children received no treatment.

After a three-month period, 20 of the 30 children who were given the oil were able to control their ADHD and showed significant improvement when retested. However, researchers caution that the study is in its preliminary stages.

Much more will need to be done before the substance can be recognized as a beneficial and natural alternative treatment for ADHD.
