Soldier lightly injured in Kalandiya shooting
Palestinian gunmen open fire at Kalandiya roadblock north of Jerusalem, lightly injuring IDF soldier
A Palestinian gunmen on Monday opened fire at the Kalandiya roadblock north of Jerusalem, lightly injuring an IDF soldier. The soldier sustained injuries in his hand, the army said.
Troops returned fire and conducted searches in the area but failed to catch the perpetrators. No organization claimed responsibility for the attack.
The fire apparently came from the Kalandiya refugee camp.
The IDF issued a statement saying: “We know that checkpoints attract terror elements to conduct attacks. Terrorists prefer to carry out attacks against soldiers at checkpoints because it is difficult for them to leave the West Bank with heavy arms."
"Soldiers have been instructed to be extra vigilant to all suspicious movement and their fast reaction today prevented a more difficult outcome,” the statement said.
Last December a 20-year-old soldier was stabbed to death at the crossing. The Palestinian assailant was arrested.
Earlier Monday, it was revealed that security services in January arrested members of a Hebron terror cell responsible for a handful of deadly shooting attacks in 2005.
The terror suspects told interrogators they carried out the attacks on behalf of Hamas.
The army said six Israelis were killed and eight were injured in attacks carried out by the cell.
