Hamas: Our goal – liberate Jerusalem

Group's politburo chief Khaled Mashaal tells Sudan conference ‘our mission is to liberate Jerusalem, purify al-Aqsa Mosque.’ Referring to western threats of cuts in aid to Palestinians, Mashaal says ‘we say to our people: God, Islamic nation are with us. Do not fear poverty, do not fear threats’

Hamas politburo chief Khaled Mashaal said that the organization's goal is to liberate Jerusalem.

"Our mission is to liberate Jerusalem and purify the al-Aqsa Mosque. Islam goes forward because its power comes from Allah and it will continue to advance in spite of its opposers," Mashaal said during a conference in support of Hamas organized by Sudanese parties in the capital of Khartoum.

“We tell our people – the crowd gathered here supports our Jihad way and resistance,’ he added.

“God is leading us to victory and liberation,” he said.

Mashaal’s speech came in response to threats made by western countries regarding cuts in aid money to the Palestinians.

“We say to our people: God and the Islamic nation are with us. Do not fear poverty and do not fear the threats,” he said.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars and large amounts of gold were collected during the conference for Hamas use in protest of calls to boycott a Hamas-led Palestinian government.

It was also announced during the conference that a campaign aimed at raising millions of dollars for Hamas and the PA has been launched.

Mashaal went on to thank Hamas supporters, saying “this support is a message to the West; they will see the Muslims’ support from all over the world and stop the threats and manipulations."

“We are a nation that is willing to starve and die rather than sell out our faith, religion and holy sites,” he added.

“We say to Muslims around the world: All those in the West who threaten us are nothing compared to God’s greatness.”

‘Even if you starve them they will not surrender’

The crowd on hand urged Mashaal not to recognize Israel and called out chants for the destruction of Israel.

The Hamas leader said, “This victory (in PA elections) is a message from the Palestinian nation that it is united behind the Jihad option.”

Mashaal went on to ridicule Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, saying “the new minister of the Zionist entity is telling world leaders ‘pressure Hamas to recognize Israel.’ After 58 years, it is clear that Israel is panicking, asking the victim to recognize it and is willing to send negotiators all over the world so those who were raped and banished from their homes will recognize Israel.”

“The entire Israeli arsenal is not enough to provide peace to the Israelis,” he added.

As to the American intervention in PA affairs, Mashaal said “people in the free world are saying ‘no’ to the U.S. – in Russia and Venezuela. President (Hugo) Chavez invited us, and they (Americans) are dealing not only with Hamas but with countries that are repressed by the U.S.

He also addressed the report regarding the U.S.-Israeli plan to oust Hamas from power in the PA, saying “according to the plan, the only option is to starve the Palestinian nation in the hope it will rise up against us; but they don’t know the Palestinian people; even if you starve them they will not surrender, because they believe that happiness lies with Allah.”

“All the mothers who sent their sons to the Jihad path – did they expect money or some sort of pension in return? They received God’s insurance policy, and that is what guides our nation,” he added.
