Argentinean students: Arafat Israel's PM

Journalist laments ignorance displayed by current-day students; says tests show many students believe Hizbullah is a hurricane threatening Miami

Argentinean ignorance: This may sound like a bad joke, but many students in the University of Buenos Aires are apparently convinced that late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is not only among the living but also serves as the prime minister of Israel.

The embarrassing display of ignorance was reported by Alberto Amato, a well-known, senior Argentinean journalist and a professor at the university.

Last week, Amato published an editorial in widely-circulated newspaper Clarin where he expressed his dismay over the ignorance displayed by students these days.

His editorial, titled "Arafat, Prime Minister of Israel" starts with a series of answers to common knowledge questions students were tested on in the last few years in Amato's class.

Amato says that the Arafat answer is very common, just as students often say Hizbullah is a hurricane threatening to hit Miami.

Amato claims in his editorial that current-day students - and future journalists -do not read and fail to keep abreast of what goes on around the world, resorting instead to watching television, which Amato charges only enhances ignorance.
