Intel to build Gaza technology center

Semiconductor giant announces plans to set up technological center in Gaza aimed at providing Palestinians with training in technological information field; ‘If you talk to the leaders of the Palestinian Authority, this is exactly the kind of thing they want,’ company spokesman says

Intel, the world’s largest semiconductor company, announced on Monday that it plans to set up a technological center in Gaza aimed at providing Palestinians with training in the technological information field.

The project is estimated at USD 1 million, and the staff will be comprised mainly of Palestinians.

“We don't want to discount the tension in the area (Middle East) ... but from our perspective, we view it as something that can have a positive impact,” Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy said.

"If you talk to the leaders of the Palestinian Authority, this is exactly the kind of thing they want. They want education; they want paths to improve the economic well-being of their citizens."

The center will be established in cooperation with ANERA (American Near East Refugee Aid) and the Islamic University in Gaza.

The center will be located just outside Gaza City in an area designated to become a technology park. Construction is set to begin in a couple of months and last for about a year.

ANERA Director Peter Gubser said he believes that despite the difficult security situation in Gaza, Intel’s willingness to invest there will encourage other American corporations to follow suit.
