Karadi advises Japanese on how to fight terror

In Japan visit, police chief, his counterpart agree to cooperate on issues of drug smuggling; in China, Karadi offers advice on providing security to delegates in upcoming 2008 Olympic Games

TOKYO – Despite the fact that crime problems in Israel have not yet been solved, Police Commissioner Moshe Karadi chose to visit China and Japan to meet with his counterparts.

On Sunday, at the end of his trip, Karadi told Ynet that the visit was a success and contributed to the relations between Israel and the two countries.

In Tokyo, Karadi met with the local police chief. The Japanese asked to study the Israeli police's methods in fighting terror. Japan is worried of becoming a target for extreme Islamic organizations, judging by the intelligence they gathered in the past two years, since Japanese forces were stationed in Iraq.

The Japanese are also concerned about local terrorism in the country, after members of the "Supreme Truth" cult released nerve gas in 1995 in a Tokyo subway station, which claimed the lives of 12 people.

Karadi and his Japanese counterpart discussed the collaboration between Israeli and Japanese criminals on drug smuggling. The two agreed to cooperate on the matter.

Karadi also visited the traffic control system in Japan, and was very impressed by the Japanese' advanced technology that allows them to monitor road conditions.

Security advice for Olympic Games

The Israeli police chief also received advice from his colleague on establishing local police stations around the cities.

"In Israel, we're at a stage where we have decided to change. I was very impressed by the public service offered by the police, especially the premise that the citizen is a patron of the police," Karadi said.

The last visit of an Israeli police chief in Japan took place two years ago, by former Commissioner Shlomo Aharonishki, who had then initiated the collaboration between the two countries on matters of terrorism.

Karadi's visit to China focused on offering advice to the Chinese on the issue of security for the delegates in the 2008 Olympic Games. Karadi also mentioned that Israel has assisted other countries who have hosted the Olympic Games in the past.
