Google has hired Dr. Yoelle Maarek, formerly a senior manager at the IBM’s research laboratories in Haifa, to head the company’s new research and development center in Haifa, Ynet has learned.

Dr. Maarek has 17 years of experience in the engineering field at the IBM research center. She joined the IBM team after completing a doctorate at the Technion in Haifa. At IBM she was head of information management and was involved in developing the search engine “Juru,” which was fully developed in Haifa laboratories.

Juru was awarded as Most Accurate Search Engine by the National Institute of Standards in Technology (NIST), beating out search engines developed all over the globe.

'Ideal candidate'

Dr. Maarek told Ynet in a 2002 interview that Juru was especially well-suited for searching small and medium sized databases of trade companies and organizations that require extremely detailed searches.

IBM says that for these types of searches, Juru is better than Google. Dr. Maarek refused to comment on that statement.

Google officials said that Maarek’s extensive experience as a senior manager in a data technology and media department made her an ideal
candidate to head their first research and development center in the Middle East.

The company will open in the second quarter of 2006, and Google has plans to open additional engineering centers elsewhere in the county. Google has research centers worldwide, including in Tokyo, Zurich, Bangalor in India, New York City, Santa Monica and Mountain View in California and Kirkland in Washington state.
