Most respondents said they back continuation of cease fire with Israel, want to see peace talks resumed

Most Palestinians (80.4 percent) support a continuation of the cease fire with Israel, and 70 percent back a resumption of the peace process with Israel, a poll published on Tuesday by Dr. Nabil Kukali of the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion revealed.

According to the poll, which was conducted among 1,003 Palestinians, about half of the respondents (50.8 percent) believe Hamas should recognize Israel, while 48.5 percent are against it.

In addition, 74 percent said they support Hamas taking part in the Palestinian security mechanisms, and 53.5 percent think the Palestinian government should use force against armed groups that break the cease fire agreement.

The survey also showed 51.5 percent of respondents back Fatah's participation in a ruling coalition, and 41.5 said they think Hamas' Ismail Haniyeh is the best candidate for the position of prime minister.

Most participants in the poll, 94 percent, said Hamas' main task after it assumes control over the government should be to improve the Palestinians' living conditions.

On the question of the Right of Return, 84.3 of respondents said they object to a solution to the refugee problem by way of financial compensation, while only 15.8 percent supported the notion.

According to the poll, 63 percent of respondents advocate Muslim riots and violent attacks in response to the publication of cartoons mocking Prophet Muhammad, while 35 stated they oppose such acts.

A majority of the participants in the survey, 70 percent, declared they continue to support PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' policy.
