Israelis advised to avoid Jordan, Egypt

Counter-Terrorism Bureau upgrades travel warning due to boost in global Jihad activity; meanwhile, Jordanian authorities foil terror attack

The Counter-Terrorism Bureau upgraded its warning to Israeli citizens, advising them to avoid any visits to Arab countries and particularly to Egypt and Jordan due to concrete warnings regarding global Jihad plans to strike at Israeli targets such as embassies and tourists.

 

A senior defense official warned that in recent days, authorities are seeing extensive activity by global Jihad groups, particularly in neighboring countries and near the border with Israel.

 

"As a result, we decided to upgrade the travel warning," he said.

 

Officials here have been monitoring with concern the establishment of global Jihad terror cells near Israel. In recent months, several attacks were carried out in the region by various groups, including al-Qaeda.

 

Meanwhile, Jordanian intelligence officials recently thwarted a terror attacks aimed at residents and tourists in Amman, Jordan's capital. Israel's leading newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth, learned that a cell belonging to al-Qaeda infiltrated Jordan last week and planned to blow up a car bomb at the entrance to one of the large hotels in the Jordanian capital.

 

Details of the foiled attack were provided by Jordanian television Wednesday, but no details were provided regarding the exact target of the attack or whether the six cell members, including Saudis, Iraqis and a Libyan national, were apprehended.
