The skirmishes erupted when al-Aqsa members tried to blockade roads to be taken by President Mahmoud Abbas’ convoy on his way out of Gaza to protest the Palestinian Authority’s failure to find them jobs.

Abbas held talks in Gaza with Hamas’ prime minister-designate Ismail Haniyeh.

Palestinian sources said gunmen from Fatah and Abbas’ convoy were injured in the violence. Palestinian policemen succeeded in breaking through the barricades set up by al-Aqsa men.

Demands unclear

Palestinians said Abbas remains in his Gaza office and was not present when the two sides clashed.

In another development, a group of 25 gunmen took

control of the power station in Gaza. Two people were injured in exchanges of fire during the take over which lasted less than an hour.

Gunmen also took over a hospital in Khan Younis. Their demands remain unclear.
