Online anti-Semitism: Hackers suspected to be associated with al-Qaeda have targeted several Israeli websites recently, Israel's leading newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported on Tuesday.

Some of the pictures planted by the hackers included a yellow Star of David, a picture of ailing Prime Minister Ariel Sharon dressed in Nazi uniform setting the globe on fire, and a picture of an eagle pecking at Sharon's head.

The recent online attacks appear to bear the hallmarks of al-Qaeda, according to Koren Lev, Information Security Chief at Bezeq-Call who
detected the attack unfolding in real time.

"All the signs point to an al-Qaeda attack because we see the same patterns from a digital attack that took place a year and half ago when the organization targeted the Israel Air Force website. Moreover, even the pictures implanted in this attack are similar to pictures from the last hackers' attack" Lev said.

The targeted websites include leading Israeli soccer club Maccabbi Tel and Pnina Rosennblum's cosmetics company.

Lev attempted to take several measures to stop the hackers' attack but failed. The systems used to protect the websites are inadequate and could be compromised again easily, he said.

Meanwhile, the distasteful pictures were removed over the weekend.
