One shekel coin

Faulty coins returned to Dutch mint

About a year ago it was discovered that 40 percent of a delivery of 9.5 million 1 shekel coins manufactured in Holland are faulty

The Bank of Israel suspended an order of shekel coins from the Royal Dutch Mint until it becomes clear how millions of faulty 1 shekel coins arrived in Israel.

About a year ago it was discovered that 40 percent of a delivery of 9.5 million 1 shekel coins manufactured in Holland are faulty. At the coins department they were amazed, refused to accept the delivery and returned it to Holland where faulty and fine coins were separated.

The fine coins were recently sent back to Israel. Israel’s leading newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth has learnt that the Dutch mint agreed to replace the faulty coins at no additional cost.

Bank of Israel's Spokeswoman Sarit Giladi-Dor said: “From the clarification with the Dutch mint we learnt that its supplier delivered faulty tokens. Therefore the Dutch mint bears full responsibility. It should be noted that the Bank of Israel has not yet paid for the goods.”
