UK Navy ship docks in Haifa

Visit first by British Royal Navy warship since 2001; commanding officer says visit ‘indication of continuing good relations between our two navies’

The British Royal Navy’s warship HMS St. Albans docked in Haifa Wednesday, the first visit to Israel by a UK navy ship in five years.

The 190 crew members spent the day in Israel, touring the Galilee and the Haifa area, while a group of 40 Israeli Navy sailors toured the ship. According to UK navy spokesmen, the Israeli sailors were “particularly impressed by the size of the galley.”

The day concluded with the reception on the ship’s flight deck, hosted by Commanding Officer Steve Dainton.

“I am delighted my ship and sailors had the opportunity to visit the Port of Haifa. I think that the visit is an indication of the continuing good relations between our two navies, and indeed, our two countries.” Cmdr. Dainton said.

Haifa was one stop in HMS St. Albans’ tour of the Mediterranean and Black Sea region.

The ship is slated to continue its tour of the region, passing through the Suez Canal and into the Gulf region, where it will be involved in security maintenance.
