Brandeis University shuts Palestinian exhibit

IDF veteran displays art by Palestinian kids, university says conflict-related presentations must be 'balanced'

Israel’s leading newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported Thursday that the administration of Brandeis University in Massachusetts has closed an exhibit of drawings by Palestinian children about the conflict, saying the exhibit was one-sided and showed only one side of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

But the interesting thing in this story is that the exhibit was organized by an Israeli student.

According to reports published in the Boston Globe, Lior Halperin served in the IDF. She asked the Palestinian children to draw the pictures, saying she wanted to present the "Palestinian view" of the conflict to the university.

One picture shows an IDF bulldozer threatening Palestinian children lying in a pool of blood. Another shows a Palestinian child with one leg hobbling on crutches in a refugee camp.

The exhibit, which featured 17 drawings, was removed following numerous complaints. Halperin denounced the move as "censorship" and "discrimination." But university officials said they remain committed to presenting the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in a balanced manner.
