Navy seizes explosives off Gaza shore

Navy ship intercepts boat carrying explosives trying to make its way from Egyptian territorial waters to Gaza Strip; 8 sacks containing explosives retrieved from under water

The Navy thwarted an attempt to smuggle explosives from Egypt to the Gaza Strip on Sunday, the second such operation in less than two weeks.

A navy ship intercepted a suspicious boat approaching a no-sailing zone in Israel's territorial waters near the Israel-Egypt border.

Fearing the boat is carrying terrorists Israeli soldiers fired warning shots, prompting sailors on the suspicious ship to throw bags full of explosives in the sea.

Navy divers retreated eight bags full of explosives and landmines soon after the arrest.

In a similar operation one and a half weeks ago, the navy seized 11 sacks containing over 500 kilos (about 1,100 pounds) of explosives, which were hauled from 32 meters (105 feet) under water.

Many Palestinian fishermen make a living in waters along the Gaza Strip, impinging on the Navy's maneuvering options.

The Israel Defense Forces is reviewing all naval procedures along the Gaza Strip, including procedures for monitoring Palestinian fishing boats.
