Hebron: Israelis show solidarity with Palestinians

Descendents of Jews killed in 1929 Hebron massacre visit city to tell settlers ‘you have no legitimacy to act in our names, harass local Palestinian population’

Surprise visitors arrive in Hebron Tuesday: Some 10 Israelis, the descendents of Jewish families who lived through the events of 1929, when Arab attacks during the British mandate took the lives of 133 Jewish victims.

The Israelis came to show full solidarity with the local Palestinian population for “the harassment they suffer at the hands of settlers, who use what happened to our families to justify their violence today,” according to Shabtai Gold.

Gold does not object to the existence of a Jewish settlement in Hebron, as long as it exists peacefully next to its Arab neighbors.

“We came to tell them, you don’t represent the families of 1929,” Gold said. “We came here to tell them that they have no legitimacy to act in our names and to harass the local population. We came to express our full solidarity in the face of the harassment by settlers, police and the state.”

The visit was organized by the Bnei Abraham organization, which has been active in Hebron in the past year and has already brought some 2,000 people there.

Avihai Becker, an activist with the organization, said that the aim of the tours is to “present the real situation of the Hebron population to the Israeli public, especially considering the helplessness of the security establishment.”

Hebron has become one of the most sensitive and violent locations in the West Bank, and terrorist acts and violent scuffles break out between Jews and Palestinians there regularly.
