Assad calls for ceasefire

During phone call with Turkish prime minister, Bashar Assad says ceasefire needed to stop Israeli attacks on Lebanon

Syrian President Bashar Assad addressed for the first time the war in the north and said a ceasefire was needed to stop Israeli attacks in Lebanon. The Syrian president made the remarks during a phone conversation with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip.

According to Israeli estimations and reports in Arab media, Syria and Iran are working to support Hizbullah and help it survive the conflict with Israel. The aim is to safeguard the organization so that it can serve the two states in a future confrontation, around Iran's nuclear program for example.

Qatari newspaper al-Watan said that Damascus and Teheran reached an agreement according to which a Hizbullah defeat must be avoided, and that supporting this organization and Palestinian organizations in the territory will serve the strategic interests of Damascus and Tehran.

Hariri slams Hizbullah

On Tuesday, a convoy of trucks was bombed in eastern Lebanon. IDF sources said the trucks were carrying arms from Syria and on their way to Hizbullah in southern Lebanon.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip met with Lebanese parliamentary majority leader and with the anti-Syrian leader Saad al-Hariri on Tuesday. During the meeting Hariri slammed Hizbullah.

"Lebanon is in an unnecessary situation. Lebanon must not turn into an arena for others' battles. Whoever wants to fight Israel – should go and open their own front, they can go and fight Israel and maybe even win. The main point is they shouldn't incite people here just to open a front against Israel," Hariri said in an interview to al-Jazeera.
