VIDEO - No let-up in rocket barrages. Friday evening rocket barrages from south Lebanon were renewed against northern Israeli settlements. Police reported that rockets hit Nahariya, two of which hit empty homes, causing damage but incurring no casualties. At least three rockets hit open areas around Tiberias. Two barrages hit Safed, and at least ten rockets landed in the Golan Heights. Thus far no casualties were reported. Sirens sounded in the Haifa, Nahariya and Rosh Pina areas around 5:00 p.m. Friday, sending residents to take cover in their bomb shelters. Two private homes, just 20 meters away from each other in Nahariya, were directly struck by rockets. The first rocket hit the home of the Benyamin family, who were at home at the time. The second hit the Markovitch family home, causing severe damage. My son screamed, ‘Dad, dad, a Katyusha fell on us.’ I went outside and didn’t see anything. Everything was still intact. But then we heard the second whistle. We were about to go into the shelter when there was a massive blast. The whole yard was destroyed and the house was hit. I have seven kids and luckily not all of them were home. Just five of use were in the protected room, and that is what saved us.” Despite the direct hit, Markovitch, who has much experience with Katyusha threats, is not discouraged. “In 1982 the house next door – my father’s house - was hit by mortar shells. This time it was a Katyusha, but we will stay here because this is our home and we have no other. We were born here and we’ll die here, in Nahariya.” Nahariya mayor Jackie Sabag, who arrived at the scene, put up the families at the Carlton hotel until their houses were fixed. Haifa: 30 wounded Friday afternoon Tiberias residents were also alarmed by the Katyusha blasts. A Tiberias resident told Ynet: “Four rockets landed here. I heard a tremendous boom. We’re in our bomb shelters because the alarm went off about one minute before.” The rocket strikes on Tiberias were heard from a great distance. Hagai from Afula told Ynet, “I heard two booms really close by. The first was duller but the second was definitely closer. They’re checking where they hit. It’s dangerous to go out and look. Until 4:00 p.m. people were in town, people had gone out to go shopping for Shabbat. We heard a long siren before the rockets started coming down.” Earlier Friday, at least 30 people were wounded, four of them moderately to seriously and the rest lightly, when Hizbullah rocket salvos rained down on Haifa on Friday afternoon. Seven rockets hit the northern city throughout the day. One of the rockets hit a public building, causing structural damage. The wounded mainly suffered from shrapnel and glass wounds and were evacuated to the Rambam Medical Center, Carmel Medical Center and Bnei Zion Medical Center in Haifa. About an hour an a half after the first falls, a siren was heard in Haifa again and three rockets landed in Haifa and the surrounding areas. An air raid siren was heard at 1: 15 p.m. Friday in the city, and five rockets landed in three different spots across the city immediately afterwards, including in a central neighborhood. Emergency crews were dispatched to the landing areas and attended to other people who were injured in the attack. Several people were treated for shock. Simultaneously, two rockets landed in open areas in near Kiryat Shmona. There were no reports of injuries. Another rocket landed several minutes later at the Rosh Pina and Hatzor Haglilit area one person was lightly injured. A heavy rocket barrage also hit Safed, with nine rockets landing in open areas near the city. There were no reports of injuries. A fire started in three places in the Safed and Kiryat Shmona area. Six teams of firefighters and light airplane are working at this time in an attempt to control the fire. At 2:30 p.m., five rockets landed in open areas in the Maalot, Western Galilee and Safed area. There were no reports of injuries or damage. City center hit by rockets (Photo: Monette Galpaz) Most of the injured were city residents walking in the street at the time of the falls. The rocket that directly hit a public building opened a large hole in the concrete ceiling. Pieces of glass were seen flying all over the area after display windows were shattered in nearby buildings. Large pieces of concrete and tree branches landed next to the building. Police sappers were dispatched to the area and were dealing with the rocket that infiltrated a concrete roof, went through the entrance to the building and landed in the ground. Injured evacuated (Photo: Doron Golan) Amnon Mai, a business owner, was at his store when he heard the siren. "I heard the siren and immediately went up to the reinforced room. Suddenly I heard a loud explosion. From the explosion I understood that the rocket landed nearby. Several minutes later I came down and saw the damages caused by the fall." Mai's wife was hurt by shrapnel from the store's display windows which were shattered. 'A great miracle' According to Mai, there were not many people in the area Friday. "The number of people who were here was less than a quarter of the people who are here on a normal Friday. If the fall had taken place on a normal Friday, many people would have been hurt here," he said. A woman working nearby said: "There was a great miracle here. I heard a large explosion and immediately ran to the place. I saw injured people and people who ran away in panic. I'm not afraid and therefore I stayed in Haifa." Ivan Tihienko, a Haifa resident, recounted the events: "We felt the shockwave in the windows. In the past two days everything was quiet. What annoys us is that the siren is activated after the rockets land." "I'm not thinking about leaving, it's nice that there are no traffic jams. But I understand it's not a real war, it's a declaration of intents. When the mass bombardments begin, then we will leave," he said. I call on the residents not to fall hostage to the calm illusion, this is a fictitious calm. They must remain in the reinforced rooms. I know it's difficult, but this difficulty will pass. We have to emerge with the minimum number of injured from these events." On Thursday morning, Haifa residents also woke up to the sounds of sirens, but no rockets had fallen in the area. Thursday was a relatively calm day in the Galilee, but at the end of the day a small number of rockets were fired at Carmiel, Tiberias and other communities. Hizbullah's al-Manar television station aired photos of the place the rockets hit in Haifa. The network expressed great happiness over the falls in Haifa, saying that "this was in response to Israel's aggressiveness in Lebanon." The rocket fire has so far claimed the lives of 15 Israeli civilians. Sharon Roffe-Ofir, Eli Senyor, Roee Nahmias and Hagai Einav contributed to the report
