IDF Intelligence: Lebanon crisis good for Syria, Iran

Army Intelligence chief says countries view widening of Lebanon crisis as opportunity to distract world’s attention from Hariri assassination, nuclear program

IDF Intelligence Chief Major-General Amos Yadlin said Sunday evening in a press briefing that Syria and Iran see the widening conflict on the northern border as an opportunity to advance their interests, and to distract world attention away from them.

"Both of these countries have their own agendas: Iran is facing a decision by the international community over the issue of their nuclear program and sanctions and Syria is afraid of steps by the international community over the murder of Lebanese former Prime Minister Hariri," he said.

Yadlin added that “the operation in Lebanon is aimed at increasing Israel’s deterrence in the region; our goal is that our neighbors will be countries with the responsibility and capability to act against those who are carrying out terror attacks from within their territory. We want Lebanon to take responsibility for acts against Israel that originate from its territory.”
