Arab MK under protection following threats

'Threats and scorn I received are unprecedented' says Ahmed Tibi, who received two body guards

Following threats made against Knesset Member Ahmad Tibi (United Arab List-Ta'al), the Knesset's officer decided to assign him two security guards who will accompany him in the coming period.

Threats made on Tibi began following a harsh comment published against him in the media, condemning his attacks on the country's leadership.

Tibi, who was also provided with extra security as a Knesset Member during the al-Aqsa intifada, said: "I know what it is to be threatened and protected. I've already been there, but the threats and scorn I received now are unprecedented. They have a direct cause – some of the threats that are reaching my officer are attached with a file containing an article written against me. Unfortunately all of the primeval fears and mistaken anti-Arab hatred during the time of war have been concentrated on the figure of Ahmed Tibi."

On Monday, following the difficult incident at the Lebanese village of Qana, Arab Knesset Members made harsh statements during a speech by Defense Minister Amir Peretz.

Knesset Member Ibrahim Sarsur called Peretz "a child murderer" and was thrown out of the Knesset hall. Tibi added, "enough, you are a man of war, you are no longer a mean of peace."

Later, he told Ynet: "Rice's smart bombs and the extolled missiles of Halutz have caused another, predictable war crime against Lebanese civilians. Olmert, Peretz, and Bush are politically and morally responsible for this terrible march of bodies."
