Gershon listened to reviews from the hospital managers on the fortification of the hospital and toured the maternity ward which has been moved to a fortified basement. He later briefed reporters on the hospital's balcony, when a whistle was suddenly heard and a rocket fell in the area.

The briefing continued after a minute, but only a few second passed before another landing was heard, although not in the major-general's field of vision.

Gershon referred to the plan to evacuated northern residents to the center of the country: "Does anyone think that it would have been possible to take four million citizens and move them? The decision to evacuate entire communities is to be made by the political echelon."

49 civilians killed so far

At least 10 rockets landed in the Kiryat Shmona area at 11 a.m. Tuesday, and at least four rockets landed in open areas near Nahariya; there were no injuries.
