Iran: Muslim world must defend Hizbullah

Spiritual leader Khamenei calls on 'entire Muslim community' to assist Lebanese terror group, charges US, Britain and Israel with attempt to 'eradicate Islam from region'

Iran's spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called on "all Islamic communities to assist Hizbullah in its struggle against Israel," according to official Iranian television.

"The entire Islamic community must defend Hizbullah," Khamenei said in a meeting with worshippers.

Iran's spiritual leader also issued a scathing attack on the United Nations over what he characterized as its "inability to function" in order to resolve the crisis in Lebanon. Khamenei also charged that the United States, "with Zionist assistance and with the help of European countries such as Britain, is attempting to eradicate Islam from the region."

Khamenei also slammed several Arab nations over what he called their silence in the face of the fighting in Lebanon. He did not specifically name the countries but noted they chose to stand by the US instead of backing Lebanon.

"Those countries must remember that the US would never take care of their interests," he said.

Assad: Public support for Hizbullah

Meanwhile, Syrian President Bashar Assad reiterated his support for Hizbullah and stressed that the current situation "proves that resistance is the only way to return the rights."

On Monday, the Syrian leader met with an Egyptian delegation that visited Damascus in order to "express its solidarity with Lebanese resistance," that is, Hizbullah. The delegation, comprised of parliamentarians, public figures and union members among others, voiced its complete support for Syrian positions and for "the noble Lebanese and Palestinian resistance facing off against Israeli aggression."

The official Syrian news agency reported that Assad provided "a comprehensive explanation regarding current diplomatic developments and the consequences of the Israeli aggressions on Lebanon, while also explaining the things threatening the Arab nation's existence and identity."
