IDF arms recovered in Lebanon

Israeli equipment left in hands of Hizbullah following 2000 withdrawal; now, army recovers much of it, including rifles and radio equipment with Hebrew inscriptions

A large selection of Hizbullah arms and equipment found in southern Lebanon during the month of fighting came from the IDF itself, according to a military official.

Major Meir Guttman, who is the deputy commander of the unit responsible for recovered arms, said that radio equipment, vests, and rifles that were used by the IDF in the past were found by troops operating in Lebanon.

According to Guttman, the weapons and equipment may have been stolen from the Israeli army or left behind following the IDF's withdrawal.

On Tuesday, Guttman spoke with Ynet and discussed the unit's intensive work in recent days, noting that unit members do not enter Lebanon because of the high risk involved, and instead wait for the weapons to be brought back by troops.

All equipment is checked by sappers to ensure it was not booby-trapped, he said.

"The booty is examined and analyzed by various IDF elements in order to study it and draw conclusions, which are of great importance," Guttman added.

Equipment recovered by Israeli troops operating in Lebanon includes night-vision equipment, gas masks, cutting-edge radio equipment, dozens of rifles, various types of handguns, silencers, helmets, and protective vests.
