IDF: Budget behind equipment shortage

IDF Logistics Directorate head, Major General Avi Mizrahi responds to criticisms of severe shortages in equipment: 'If there was more money I would take more war rations'

The IDF is dealing with serious criticism from soldiers returning from the front, and especially from reserve soldiers, of shortages in equipment, food, and water, which made fighting in Lebanon even more difficult.

Speaking to Ynet on Tuesday evening, Logistics Directorate head, Major General Avi Mizrahi, responded to complaints, saying that "a shortage in budget is behind the equipment shortage. There were units which we did not get to, but that's because of difficulties in fighting."

Despite the wide-spread criticism, Major General Mizrahi claims that on the ground, there were not many errors, and that the incidents reported on in the press were rare. "We dealt with the need to feed tens of thousands of soldiers beyond the usual scope, and it worked well, though the media is always going on a few rare and lone stories," he said. "I don't think I need to make sweeping changes, but if there would be more money, I will certainly stock up more war portions," he added.

Equipment was good

Regarding claims that defective military equipment was given to reserve soldiers, Mizrahi said that most of the equipment was functioning, and given to fighting units in line with preferences and budgetary requirements:

"Regarding the equipment, which is weapons, helmets, shoes, batteries, arms, belts, uniforms, and any other thing – the infantry divisions which operated on Lebanese territory received equipment equal in worth to the equipment of regular soldiers, albeit in smaller quantities."
