An Israeli soldier was killed Saturday when a terrorist opened near the Bekaot checkpoint in the Jordan Valley; IDF soldiers manning the checkpoint returned fire and shot the terrorist dead.

The soldier has been identified as Staff Sergeant Roee Farjun, 21, of Yahud.

Initial reports said the terrorist was dropped off in the area and then made his way on foot to the checkpoint, where he opened fire at the soldier from seven meters (23 feet) away.

Palestinian sources in Nablus said that the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, Fatah's military wing, have claimed responsibility for the attack.

There has been no official confirmation by the group.

In May 2004 a terrorist detonated himself at the checkpoint, lightly injuring an IDF soldier.

In March 2006 a terror attack was foiled when a 10 kg (22 pounds) explosives belt was found on an 18 year-old Palestinian. The teen raised the suspicions of the Haredi Brigade soldiers, who then closed the checkpoint and dispatched Border Guard sappers to the scene. A search of the Palestinian’s body found the explosives belt.

Sappers later performed a controlled-detonation of the belt.
