Mofaz: Israel disrupted Iranian plan

In memorial service to rocket victims, former defense minister says Iran activated Hizbullah against Israel

Israel was able to disrupt the Iranian plan to use Hizbullah against the Jewish state, Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz said Monday during a memorial service for the eight train employees killed in Haifa by a rocket in the fourth day of the Lebanon war.

"Iran's intention was to activate Hizbullah against Israel, but the IDF fighting disrupted the plan," Mofaz said. "As long as Lebanon and the international community won't act against the (Iranian) plan, we'll stand up for our right to prevent harm to Israel."

Minister Mofaz, who already visited the families of the eight rocket victims after the attack, promised that the Transportation Ministry's and his own door will remain open to them. Addressing the fighting in Lebanon, the minister stressed the solidarity displayed by Israeli society, which he said is "stronger than any external threat."

The memorial service was attended by hundreds, including relatives of the victims, co-workers, train management, and transportation officials.

Some relatives delivered speeches during the event, with the sister of one of them calling on the families to move on with their lives despite their loss.

"Our loved ones wouldn't want us to stop living and being happy. This is life, where sadness and joy intermix," she said.

Meanwhile, the sister of victim Rafi Hazan wondered aloud "why we're destined to continue living through one terror attack to the next one, and from one war to another?"

"Why wasn't the IDF given the opportunity to complete the military operation and defeat Hizbullah?" she said.

Following the ceremony, relatives and friends lit candles at the site and stayed in the area for a while, apparently finding it difficult to say a final goodbye.
