Terrorist arrested north of Jerusalem

Pursuant to information received Tuesday, which led to heightened alert in north of capital, Border Guard police forces arrest Palestinian operative Wednesday afternoon

Border guard police forces operating in the Jerusalem vicinity arrested at the Hizma crossing, north of the capital, a Palestinian terrorist planning to execute a terror attack on Israeli soil. The arrest took place after almost a day's worth of heightened alerts in the area.

The arrested terrorist is a Tanzim operative from Nablus. At the time of his arrest, he did not have an explosive belt on his person, but rather, was arrested based on intelligence information.

In the past day, the defense establishment dealt with 10 early warnings regarding the intent of terror organizations to carry out attacks in Israel. Most of the alerts, which referred to a variety of attacks, including suicide bombings, kidnaps, shootings and missile launchings, were associated with Islamic Jihad operatives in the northern West Bank.

Already on Monday, the Israel Defense Forces increased its operations around the Jerusalem vicinity based on information regarding attempts to execute an attack on the Israeli home front in the area.

IDF forces boosted security checks in the Binyamin and Etzion regions, and intensified screenings.

On Tuesday, Jerusalem police joined the forces and combed the area of the Jerusalem periphery. The heightened alert was relaxed on Wednesday after midnight. Wednesday morning, the terrorist was arrested during routine operations.
