Good news for Israelis headed to the United States: The new Israeli driver's license issued Tuesday will be valid for private vehicles in all US states, and an international license will no longer be needed.
Gideon Siterman, director-general of the Ministry of Transport, explained Tuesday that the new license will be titled "Driving License" as oppose to "Driving Permit." Israeli driving licenses have so far been issued under the title "Driving Permit," and US authorities would not acknowledge the documentation because of it being a permit, not a license.
In a case of car rental, Transport Ministry Spokesman Avner Ovadia explained that one must follow local rental office regulations. Numerous offices require presentation of an international as well as an Israeli license.
The Ministry of Transport has received many complaints recently by citizens who got pulled over and were told the Israeli driving permit was not acceptable in the US.
