Maccabi gets reasonable Euroleague draw
Maccabi Tel Aviv will play in group B along with Pamathinaikos, Unicaja Malaga, Cibona Zagreb, Union Olimpija, Partizan, Lottomatica Roma and DKV Joventut Badalona
Thursday’s Euroleague Basketball Championship draw determined that Maccabi Tel Aviv will play in group B along with Pamathinaikos, Unicaja Malaga, Cibona Zagreb, Union Olimpija, Partizan, Lottomatica Roma and DKV Joventut Badalona.
Maccabi will begin its campaign on October 26 when it will face Unicaja, but the much-anticipated face-off against former coaches Pini Gershon (now with Olympiacos) and David Blatt (currently head coach of Benetton Treviso) will have to wait for the later rounds.
Unicaja Malaga and Lottomatica Roma are both expected to give top-ranked Maccabi a run for its money, but the rest are considered relatively weak teams that are not supposed to give the Tel Avivians any trouble.
Maccabi was scheduled to face Badalona on October 23 for the tournament’s opening game, but the match was postponed due to the fact that Maccabi is expected to return from a series of games against NBA teams only on the 21st.
CSKA Moscow’ s Italian coach Ettore Messina, who last year led the Russian team to it’s first championship since 1971, received Coach of the Year honors.
