Hirchson seeks closer economic ties with Jordan

Finance minister to meet Jordanian counterpart during International Monetary Fund conference in Singapore

Finance Minister Abraham Hirchson is expected to meet with his Jordanian counterpart Ziad Fariz, who is also the country’s deputy prime minister.

The two are scheduled to meet in the framework of the annual International Monetary Fund conference in Singapore.

During the meeting Hirchson, who is set to leave for Singapore Saturday night along with his ministry’s director-general Yossi Bachar, is expected to discuss possibilities of boosting economic ties between Israel and Jordan.

During the conference the finance minister is also expected to meet with his German counterpart Peer Steinbrueck and IMF board of directors member Jeroen Kremers.

On Tuesday Hirchson, who will also attempt to convince businessmen to invest in Israel, is scheduled to address the conference on the country’s economic policy and State Budget.

Last Tuesday, following the government’s approval of the 2007 budget, Hirchson said "we will not go over the budget that we decided on, which would mean that the State of Israel and the government of Israel would be in crisis.

“We want to continue upholding a stable economy. Compared to 2005, the 2007 budget already allows for an addition of about NIS 4 billion (USD 900 million) for social matters."
