Israeli tourist arrested in India

Mumbai’s airport security discovers cartridge, bullets in young woman’s bag

An Israeli woman in her 20's was arrested Thursday morning in Mumbai, after arriving at the city on an El Al flight from Israel, Ynet has learned. The young woman was arrested after a cartridge loaded with 16 9-mm bullets was found in a bag she was carrying, which belonged to her brother.

The young woman was taken by the local police for investigation. Israel’s Consul General in Mumbai, Daniel Zinshtien, and Consul Danny Sivan, contacted the young woman in an attempt to help her. The consulate tried to explain that it was a mistake and was worried that the incident of tour guide Gili Haskin, would repeat itself.

This was not the first time an Israeli was arrested in India for possession of ammunition. Tour guide Gili Heskin was arrested in Trivandrum at the end of last year, after a security check for his intended flight revealed a bullet in his backpack.

Heskin spent about three weeks in prison under charges of arms trading, but was released under limiting conditions. The Foreign Ministry followed the affair closely and found a local lawyer for Heskin early on.

Heskin was released three and a half months later. Following his release he said, “If I’m asked to go back to trial, I will go back, because of me honor and because of the trust given me. However, it’s still to early for me to say whether or not I will return to India as a tour guide. I want to calm down first and then make a proper decision.”
