Sderot mayor: We’ll run out of miracles

Moyal says following Tuesday morning’s rocket attack on western Negev town, ‘It is clear that Peretz heard the blasts this morning, but he too did not bother to call. We’ll run out of miracles one day and people will be killed here; only then will the government officials arrive

Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal said following Tuesday morning’s rocket attack on the western Negev town “I heard that (Defense Minister) Amir Peretz said the Qassam fire must be stopped, but I want to remind him that as defense minister he must also implement his own recommendations.”

A woman soldier sustained moderate wounds to her stomach in the attack.

“For more than two months now no one in the government has called to get an update on the city’s security situation,” Moyal, who resides not far from Peretz, told Ynet.

“All eyes are on the north; it’s as though the people in the south who have not been able to live in peace for the past six years do not even exist. It is clear that Peretz heard the blasts this morning, but he too did not bother to call. We’ll run out of miracles one day and people will be killed here; only then will the government officials arrive.”

According to the mayor, prior to the war Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Finance Ministry officials promised a large aid package to the area.

“Two weeks ago, out of the blue, the package was cancelled; the municipality was not notified and could not protest,” he said.

“Between the investigations and committees, (Hizbullah leader Hassan) Nasrallah and the Lebanon border, no one is interested in what goes on in the south. I don’t want to sound cynical, but the war in Lebanon would have been avoided had the government dealt properly with the Qassam issue.”
