Former Minister Hanegbi's trial opens

Kadima MK to face charges of breach of trust, bribery and perjury allegedly carried out during his term as minister of the environment

Knesset Member Tzachi Hanegbi's trial opened at the Jerusalem Magistrates court Tuesday. Hanegbi is charged with carrying out a series of political appointments during his term as minister of the environment, as well as with giving briberies, breach of trust and perjury.

Hanegbi refused to answer questions by the media upon his arrival at the court.

The indictment against Hanegbi was served last month. The former minister said then that: "I am happy that finally the legal process, which dragged on and was delayed for years, has finally started. The indictment is baseless. I am convinced that that the hearings will prove that during my tenure in the Ministry for the Environment no action was taken in a way that differs from the norms that have been in place for decades."

The indictment accuses Hanegbi of having appointed Likud cronies to positions in the ministry in a "planned and systematic manner."
