Halutz on surprise visit to Golan

Army chief visits division 36 to inspect readiness of brigades located along northern border

Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lit.-Gen. Dan Halutz arrived in the Golan Heights for a surprise visit to division 36.
A 60-strong team accompanying Halutz will inspect the division's readiness for a possible confrontation with Syria.
The army randomly conducts surprise inspection of major bases where commanders and soldiers are interviewed.
After the war in Lebanon and recent tension along the border with Syria some believe Halutz's visit is of significant importance as the army prepares for a second round of clashes with Hizbullah and a possible confrontation with Syria.
Division 36 has been on high alert since the war broke out on July 12.
A report on the team's findings will be submitted to Halutz on Tuesday.
Also Monday, Halutz will oversee a ceremony to mark the replacement of the new Northern Command chief Maj.-Gen. Gadi Eisenkot who will step in the shoes of Maj.-Gen. Udi Adam.
