Northerners: Qassams all of Israel’s problem

Residents of central, north Israel march toward Peretz’s home in Sderot, deliver letter calling for his resignation; ‘we won’t allow government to present Qassam threat as problem of south Israel alone,’ they say

Residents of central and northern Israel held a rally in the western Negev city of Sderot Thursday during which they marched toward Defense Minister Amir Peretz’s home, where they delivered a letter calling for his resignation.

“We ask that you resign from the government due to your responsibility for the war in the north and its outcome,” the letter read.

“You promised to annihilate Hizbullah and return the kidnapped sons home. We the residents of the north waited patiently for the leadership to perform its duties…therefore we would be thankful if you would set an example and resign immediately, for the sake of the nation and country.”

The demonstrators, members of the Personal Accountability Forum, arrived at Sderot’s Begin Square, where they waved signs calling for Peretz’s resignation; the city’s residents, for their part, did not seem overly eager to join in, perhaps because another demonstration is planned for Saturday night outside the defense minister’s home.

“We feel that we share the same fate (with Sderot residents) after Katyushas were fired at the north,” a forum member said. “Our goal today is to ask Peretz to take responsibility for his actions and resign. We will not permit the implementation of a ‘divide and conquer’ policy and the presentation of the Qassam threat as a problem of south Israel alone.”

During the rally scheduled for Saturday Sderot residents are expected to call on security cabinet ministers to order an extensive IDF ground operation in Gaza to halt the Qassam rocket attacks.

Rally organizers sent a letter to Israel Our Home Chairman Avigdor Lieberman in which they expressed their disappointment over the fact that he did not mention the Sderot security situation during recent negotiations on his entrance into the coalition.
