MK Gal-On: Knesset should impeach Katsav

Knesset members call on president to take temporary leave of absence following attorney general's recommendation for him to suspend himself from his position until investigation in his case is completed

In wake of the attorney general's recommendation to President Moshe Katsav to take a temporary leave of absence until the legal proceedings against him have been completed, Knesset members called on the president to act on Mazuz's advice and suspend himself.

MK Zahava Gal-On (Meretz) has also called on the Knesset to act on the matter.

"Since the president has already made it clear he has no intention of operating according to the proper norms indicated by the attorney general, the Knesset has the moral obligation to impeach him," she stated.

MK Yoram Marziano (Labor) said that "following the attorney general's decision, the president has not other choice but to suspend himself immediately."

He added that Katsav should run the battle to clear his name from his home in Kiryat Malaachi and not from the president's official residence.

'Prevent humiliating impeachment'

Head of the Knesset House Committee, MK Ruhama Avraham, added: "I reiterate my position and call on the president to inform the House Committee that of temporary incapacity, until the legal proceedings in his matter conclude. By doing this the president will prevent a humiliating impeachment by the Knesset."

Attorney General Mazuz said Sunday that he believes President Moshe Katsav must suspend himself from his role following police recommendations to issue an indictment against him.

In response to a High Court petition, Mazuz wrote: "When there is a police investigation against the president of the State related to a severe criminal offense, whose character, essence, and circumstances are disgraceful, the president must consider taking a temporary leave of absence by turning to Knesset to establish a temporary incapacity."
