WASHINGTON - The Old City of Jerusalem has been pronounced one of the new wonders of the world in a joint project between the USA Today newspaper and ABC News' Good Morning America show.

A team of six experts including professors, writers and scientists, chose the ancient city as one of the seven new wonders of the world for its central place in religious history and struggles for tolerance.

Each day a new wonder is set to be revealed in the popular newspaper and on the ABC show. Two days ago the first wonder, the Potala Palace in Tibet was revealed. The second wonder, the Old City of Jerusalem, was revealed on Saturday.

The team of experts ascertained that Jerusalem serves as a spiritual nexus for the world's three major monotheistic faiths — Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

According to the team, Jerusalem is not only a holy site, but was also a battle field throughout the centuries when empires fought for its rule.

The most prominent sites in the city, earning it the title of a Wonder of the World are the Dome of the Rock, the Western Wall and The Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The judges noted other sites in the Old City that also contributed to its wonder, including the gates in the walls surrounding the city, the synagogues and the mosques.

An eighth wonder, voted on by readers and viewers, will be revealed in USA TODAY, on the GMA show, at USATODAY.com and at ABCNews.com on Nov. 24.
