VIDEO - Sderot resident Yaakov Yaakobov who was critically injured from a Qassam rocket attack Tuesday morning has died of his wounds at the Soroka Hospital in Beer Sheva. Yaakobov was injured when a Qassam rocket launched from Gaza hit the chicken packaging factory where he worked as a forklift operator. Hospital officials said that despite the efforts of the medical staff, doctors failed to save his life. Since the morning hours, doctors have engaged in efforts to stabilize Yaakobov' condition, efforts which ultimately failed. Head of the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital, Dr. Motti Klein, told Ynet: "He sustained a severe head injury and numerous shrapnel in his body. The head injury is what ultimately caused his death. We tried to earn some time, because sometimes the patients recover, but it was impossible to operate on him." Shimon Turjeman, a friend of the injured employee, told Ynet Tuesday morning: "I was standing about 20 meters (65.6 feet) away from the worker who was critically injured. Suddenly we heard a loud explosion. I ran to the place and saw my friend lying on the floor bleeding." Members of the Yaakobov family have gathered around the bed of their father Yaakov in the afternoon, and called on Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to wake up because "Sderot is crying." Yaakobov, 43, immigrated with his family to Israel from the Caucuses 12 years ago. He worked as a forklift driver at the chicken slaughtering factory at the Shaar Hanegev industrial zone and when the alert went off, he was not able to reach the protected area in the factory, and got hit with shrapnel in his head and all over his body.
