Poland: Israeli girl killed in ski accident

Parked car rolls down hill in Polish mountain resort, slams into group of skiers

A parked car rolled down a hill in a Polish mountain resort and slammed into a group of skiers, killing a 12-year-old Israeli girl, police said Thursday.

The car, parked at the top of a hill in Zakopane in southern Poland, rolled nearly 200 meters (650 feet) down a road and onto a ski slope, police spokeswoman Monika Krasnicka-Bros said.

The vehicle then rammed into a group of people waiting for a ski lift, killing a 12-year-old girl - and injuring another girl, Krasnicka-Bros said.

It was not immediately clear why the empty car began rolling, she said. Police were looking for the vehicle’s owner.

The accident occurred just a few days after a 12-year-old Israeli boy was killed in a ski accident at the Club Med Cervinia ski resort in the Italian Alps.

'Stumbled and hit his head'

The child, who was seriously injured, was evacuated to a hospital in the city of Torino, where he died of his wounds.

The police officer on duty in Aosta, the district in charge of Cervinia, told Ynet that the boy injured his head while skiing without a helmet.

According to the officer, "He encountered an obstacle in the route, and then stumbled and hit his head hard. The case is under investigation and the investigating officer was sent to the hospital in Torino."

The official added that the officer in charge of investigating the incident is making his way to the hospital in Torino.

An investigation carried out by the foreign ministry revealed that the boy had hit his head on a poll at the cable car station while skiing down the mountain.
