Bill: PM candidates must file health report

Knesset's Justice Committee discusses bill ordering candidates for prime minister to file report on health condition month before elections. Bill proposed by MK Danny Naveh following Former PM Sharon's stroke last year

The Knesset Justice Committee has discussed Monday morning amending the law on candidates for prime minister. According to the new law, prime minister candidates would be forced to submit a report on their medical situation, about one month before elections.

The amendment was proposed following Former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke last year, and the events between his first stroke leading up to the second one which left him in a vegetative state.

Chairman of the Justice Committee, MK Menahem Ben-Sasson (Kadima) told Ynet before the hearing that he objected to the proposal.

"I object to the bill since I feel it violates the law of patient's rights, and man's right to privacy," said Ben-Sasson. "If this bill should pass, we will witness campaign propaganda which revolves around the slightly high blood pressure and the deviating cholesterol of one candidate or another."

MK Danny Naveh (Likud) who was responsible for introducing the bill, explained to Ynet that "At the heart of the matter lies the need to reach the right balance between the public's right to know and privacy. Whoever is going to be a leader must give up his privacy to a certain extent, whoever sends our children to war, we must be sure he is doing it while fully competent."
