Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky withdrew from the race to Israel Defense Forces' top job on Sunday, justifying the move with the need for a "wide consensus" on the identity of Lit. Gen. Dan Halutz' successor.
"Since you've decided, according to reports, to appoint a chief of staff soon instead of waiting for the facts related to the war to be clarified, I feel that it won't be appropriate for me to take on the chief of staff job at this moment in time," Kaplinsky wrote in a letter he sent to Defense Minister Amir Peretz.
