Apex will be Israeli tennis player Shahar Peer’s sponsor for the next three years, Yedioth Ahronoth has learned.
The portfolio management company is expected to sign a contract with the tennis star for a sum of between USD 130,000 to USD 170,000 per year.
Apex will sponsor Peer in return for her willingness to represent the company through public relations events and advertisements.
Peer, 19, is considered to be the best Israeli tennis player of all times, and is ranked 15th in the world. Her latest success was at the Australian Open, where she reached the quarter finals.
Peer’s yearly expenditure is estimated at USD 250 thousand, warranting her representatives to turn to several leading companies in the market in search of a sponsor, before finally making a deal with Apex.
The investment group deals mainly with a variety of fields in the capital market, managing assets and funds amounting to about NIS 5 billion (USD 1.2 billion).
On January 23rd, Peer nearly ended Serena Williams' run to a potential eighth Grand Slam singles title.
Peer was two points away from beating Williams before the American came back for a 3-6, 6-2, 8-6 win.
"She's a champion and she knows how to handle these situations," Peer said. "She was playing too good in the end."
Peer wasn't good at converting break points - she managed only three of 13, while Williams, befitting a player who has seven Grand Slam singles titles, was good on five of six chances. That statistic ultimately decided the match.
"It was 4-all in the third, I had three break points," said Peer. "She aced me every time, on two break points. You can do nothing. You can just clap hands for her."
