Herzl's grave plot desecrated

Workers at Mt. Herzl cemetery discover vandalism around grave site twice in one week; say police complaints do not help. Police launch investigation into incidents

The grave plot of the father of modern Zionism, Theodore Herzl, who is buried in Jerusalem, was vandalized over the weekend by unknown persons.

Workers at the Mt. Herzl cemetery were surprised to discover the grave plot of its founder desecrated. Plants were uprooted, and flags of Israel and the World Zionist Organization were found torn.

This was the second such incident to occur in 24 hours, and sources from the site said that this was a recurring problem. However, police complaints were of no help and in many cases, and were therefore simply not filed.

"It's not enough that we have to fight anti-Semitism and hatred of Israel all over the world, now we are experiencing it in Israel as well. The vandals did not just harm Herzl's grave, but the whole Zionist ideology.

"I hope the police take this into account and hold a quick and efficient investigation in order to prosecute those responsible,' said Chairman of the Executive of World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency for Israel Zeev Bielski.

Yaakov Glispan, the cemetery caretaker responsible for Herzl's grave, told Ynet "This is rude, evil, and serious desecration, I went out of my mind when I heard about it. We cannot let this go on."

The Jerusalem Police announced that they had launched an investigation into the two complaints.
