Britain supports Israel joining OECD

Israel receives backing from British chancellor in joining prestigious Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development

Britain will support Israel’s addition to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Chancellor Gordon Brown assured Israeli Finance Minister Abraham Hirchson Wednesday.

The two ministers met in London to discuss the possibility of a summit between finance ministers of Middle Eastern countries as part of an effort to increase financial cooperation in the region.

Hirchson invited Brown to increase financial cooperation between Israel and Britain, and to help Israel learn from Britain’s success in regulating the economy and optimizing public systems.

Israel’s finance minister welcomed Brown’s support, as Israel has made repeated efforts to join the prestigious organization in recent years. Governor of the Bank of Israel Stanley Fischer contributed largely to the efforts with his numerous meetings with other bank heads in the OECD.

During his trip, Hirchson was invited to participate at the Tel Aviv Stock Market’s bi-annual conference held in London. The conference presents investment possibilities in the Israeli market to institutional investors and others from European Union member states.

Hirchson was joined by Director General of the Finance Ministry Yoram Ariav for his London meeting.
