The Samaria military court on Sunday convicted Fuaz Abara, a 36-year-old resident of Nablus, for his involvement in the Carmel Market suicide bombing in Tel Aviv in a November 2004. Abara was sentenced to three life sentences plus 20 years in prison.

Three people were killed and more than 50 others were wounded in the bombing, which was carried out near a cheese vendor's stall in the outdoor market’s southern end.

“We have before us a vile murderer who showed no remorse for planning a bloodbath inside Israel,” the judges wrote in their ruling, “the defendant wanted to increase the amount of explosives to cause even more damage.”

'Planners of attack immoral'

Captain Kamil Farej, the prosecutor in the case, said during the hearing that, “the only sin of the people in the market was that they wanted to return home with a few groceries. Suddenly a loud blast rattled the market. Bodies were lying on the road – there was blood and horror.

“Those responsible for this horrid sight are a bunch of cowardly murderers, and the defendant is one of them,” he said.

The judges added that Abara was “found to be the mastermind behind the attack, and therefore our conscience tells us that he should remain behind bars for the rest of life.”

The attack itself was carried out by 16-year-old Amar Al-Far, also a resident of Nablus. Al-Far concealed the bomb inside a milk bottle. His mother, Samir Abdallah, referred to those who sent her son on the suicide mission as "immoral."

“They made a mistake when they took advantage of someone who was too young to understand the consequences of his actions,” she said at the time.
