Dichter meets top-ranking police officials

Internal security minister holding round of meetings prior to appointment of new police commissioner; rumors have it that former Jerusalem Police Chief Mickey Levy top candidate for the job

Internal Security Minister Avi Dichter is holding a round of meetings with top-ranking police officers in advance of the appointment of a new police commissioner.

Dichter has already met with Southern District Commander, Major-General Uri Bar-Lev and Jerusalem District Police Commander, Major General Ilan Franco.

Earlier this week head of the Israel Prison Service Yaakov Ganot withdrew his candidacy for the post after being informed that a committee in charge of approving his appointment was leaning to vote against him.

Speculations continued as to who the next police commissioner would be. Rumors gained momentum that Maj.-Gen. Mickey Levy, Israeli police representative in the United States, would be Dichter’s choice candidate.

Levy, who is returning from the US this week after serving out his term there, served as Jerusalem District police chief in the past.

Dichter’s office however assured Ynet Saturday that no decision had yet been made.

Police top ranks claimed that Levy’s return to Israel for Passover was linked to his candidacy for the top police position, but Dichter’s spokespeople said his flight was planned a long time ago, in light of the end of his term in the US.
